The Haboob Haiku Challenge has been narrowed to the top 15 entries as one week remains for Arizonans to vote on their favorite bit of wordplay about Arizona’s dust storms.
The Arizona Department of Transportation developed the finalists from about 600 entries that flowed from across the country. ADOT will announce the top vote-getter on June 29.
The winner won’t get any prize, other than bragging rights and being features on ADOT’s blog, adotblog.blogspot.com.
ADOT received more than 600 haikus from across the nation as it promoted its “Pull Aside – Stay Alive” dust storm awareness campaign. The novel approach generated news coverage across the U.S. as it spread the message to pull off roadways during dust storms rather than drive in poor visibility.
Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry, with three lines of five, seven and five syllables.
