PHOENIX - Firefighters on Friday battled a 300-acre wildfire about 12 miles northeast of Payson that had prompted officials to put residents in that area on alert for possible evacuations.

The Zane fire was within a mile of several structures Friday morning, including the Zane Grey community, the Tonto Fish Hatchery, Meads Ranch and a Baptist camp, said Vinnie Picard, spokesman for the Tonto National Forest.

No one had been evacuated as of Friday morning.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office notified residents of the Zane Grey community, subdivisions of mostly summer cabins northeast of Payson, that they may have to leave if the fire reaches certain trigger points, said Gila County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Trudy Cory.

Cory said she wasn't sure how many residents had been contacted.

More than 100 firefighters were working on the fire Friday, Picard said.
