TUCSON — A child molestation suspect was shot and killed by Tucson police late Sunday.

Police spokesman Sgt. Fabian Pacheco says the shooting occurred just before midnight as police were preparing to serve a search warrant at the suspect's home on East Calle Castor, near East 22nd Street and South Wilmot Road.

Pacheco says when two officers went to the door, 48-year-old Stanley Laverne Barr pulled a handgun as he made his way to the front of the house. The officers, who could see Barr through the screen door, repeatedly ordered Barr to drop the weapon but Pacheco says Barr instead chambered a round and pointed it at the officers, "forcing the officers to shoot."

Barr was pronounced dead a short time after being taken to University Medical Center.
