Boats tie up next to a bar along the Colorado River near Parker. Arizona ranked seventh in the nation in its number of boating accidents in 2008, yet it's one of only six states that doesn't require some or all operaters to go through a course on safe boating. Never never never take a boat out on the lakes around Phoenix on the weekend. Unless you want to make your suicide look like an accident.
I used to keep a boat on Canyon Lake then moved it to Saguaro when a spot opened up.
Saguaro is worse than Canyon but that isn't exactly praise.
The Sheriff has a LARGE lake patrol ... check out the boats and the boathouses at Saguaro and the Sheriff's station.
But you will rarely see a lake patrol officer actually out on the lake. Usually only for a day or two after a fatality and one holidays ( sometimes ).
But you can usually find 4 or 5 of them at the restaurant at Saguaro lake around noon time.
People think the posted speed limits etc. are jokes. None of the rules for safe boating are followed very well. You could say they are ignored and you wouldn't be far wrong.
You can't relax an enjoy yourself, especially on Saguaro, cause you have to have your head on a swivel constantly.
Ski boats have no regard for fishing boats. Some seem to use them as markers for a race course and come as close as they can.
I came to the conclusion the marinas don't want the Lake Patrol to patrol because it would chase off drunken customers.
