New carpool lanes have opened on the Red Mountain Freeway stretch of Loop 202, giving drivers a wider path between Mesa and Phoenix.
The Arizona Department of Transportation opened a 7-mile stretch of westbound high-occupancy vehicle lane between Gilbert Road and Loop 101 on Saturday. The eastbound HOV lane in the same area opened a week earlier.
The new carpool lanes, along with an 11-mile widening project between the junction of Interstate 10 and state Route 51 and the Loop 101 in Tempe and Phoenix, are the final step in a 20-month-long effort to improve traffic flow along the oldest part of the Red Mountain Freeway, said ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel. The work started in early 2009.
