Most state agencies will be closed Thursday for a mandatory furlough and Friday for the Christmas holiday.
An estimated 30,000 employees will have Thursday off without pay as part of legislative action to address the state budget. In all, state employees will have 12 furlough days between July 2010 and June 20, 2012. The cost savings is about $20 million.
State agencies that serve public safety, as well as the state hospital and veterans' home, will remain open.
