(AP) — The Phoenix Coyotes have trimmed their training camp roster to 31 by assigning three players to their AHL affiliate in Portland and returning defenseman Brandon Gormley to his junior team in Canada.

The moves were announced Saturday afternoon, a few hours before the Coyotes were scheduled to play the San Jose Sharks in a preseason game in California.

Sent to the Portland Pirates were goaltender Justin Pogge plus defensemen Dean Arsene and Tyler Eckford.

The 19-year-old Gormley was returned to Moncton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He was a first-round pick of the Coyotes in the 2010 NHL draft.
